Description:
Simple and damped Simple Harmonic motion: Simple harmonic motion of mechanical and electrical oscillators, vector representation of shim, addition of such vectors with fixed and random phase, use of exponential series and complex number notation. Damped notion of mechanical and electrical oscillators, heavy damping, critical damping Logarithmic decrement, Q-value, rate of energy loss.

The Forced Oscillator: Electrical and mechanical impedance. Transient and steady state behaviour of a forced oscillator. Variation of displacement and velocity with driving force frequency. Variation of phase angle with frequency between force and (a) displacement and (b) velocity. Power supplied to oscillator. Q value as measure of bandwidth.

Transverse wave motion: Partial differentiation - particle and phase velocities. The wave equation, transverse waves on a string, characteristic impedance, Reflexion and transmission of transverse waves on a boundary - impedance matching. Standing waves on a string of fixed length-eigenfrequencies, energy in single mode of vibration. Wave groups, group velocity, dispersion.

Longitudinal Waves: Wave equation - sound waves in gases - energy distribution in sound waves, acoustic impedance. Waves in a solid - transmission and reflection at a boundary.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.
